Calibrate by moving the phone in a figure-8. Keep it flat and away from metal, magnets and vehicles. The compass shows magnetic north. Declination (difference to true north) is small in much of Europe and Africa but can exceed 10–20° in North America, Russia, Australia and high latitudes – check it on your paper map and correct bearings. If the phone has no magnetometer, use No-tech nav.

Save by GPS, by typing coordinates (decimal, DMS or UTM grid references as printed on topographic maps, e.g. 33T 500000 4650000), or by tapping the Zone map / Photo maps.
GPS works without mobile network or internet. Recording uses live GPS – keep the screen on or the app open. Backtrack sets the start of your track as compass target.
Photograph any paper map (topographic sheet, tourist board, atlas). Calibrate it with 2 known points (3 if rotated); your live GPS position, places and track then appear on it – 100% offline. Tap a calibrated map to save a place there.

Project a point
From a known point, walk X metres on bearing Y – where do you end up?
Pace counter
Tap every time your LEFT foot lands. Calibrate: walk a known 100 m and count (typical 60–70 pairs on flat ground).

Safe? Check danger. Shout, shake shoulders.
Not breathing normally (gasping ≠ breathing)? Start now. Send someone for an AED/help.
Heel of hand on the centre of the chest, other hand on top, arms straight.
Push 5–6 cm deep, 100–120/min, full recoil. Follow the beat.
If trained: tilt head, lift chin, 2 breaths (1 s each, chest rises). Otherwise hands-only.
Swap compressor every 2 min. Do not stop until breathing returns, help takes over or you are exhausted.
Child: one or two hands, ⅓ chest depth, give 5 initial breaths. Infant: two fingers / two thumbs, ~4 cm. Drowning: 5 rescue breaths first.
START triage: ≤30 s per casualty. Only interventions allowed during sorting: open airway, control massive bleeding (tourniquet), recovery position. Re-triage regularly — status changes.
